The Canadian system of national and provincial parks
provides a unique view of the magnificence of the country.
There are 39 national parks across Canada and hundreds of
provincial parks.
Canadian national and provincial parks preserve
representative natural areas of Canada and protect their
ecological integrity for future generations.
Canadian parks also offer visitors a wide range of places
for relaxation, recreation and reflection.
National parks protect natural environments representative
of Canada's natural heritage. These special places are
gateways to nature, to adventure, to discovery, to solitude.
They celebrate the beauty and infinite variety of our
country. Protected and preserved for all Canadians and for
the world, each is a sanctuary in which nature is allowed to
evolve in its own way, as it has done since the dawn of
time. Canadians support a park experience that tourists keep
coming back to again and again, parks that protect, preserve
and provide access to a vast array of ecological zones that
support thousands of species, parks where people can hike,
camp, fish, ski, raft or just get far away from it all in
remote and amazing environments.
With a total area of almost 10,000,000 sq km, Canada is the second
largest country in the world, but it has the world's longest
coastline, 202,080 km. A young and relatively undeveloped
nation, Canada has preserved vast tracts of wilderness
parkland to protect natural heritage habitats and species.
Parks exist across Canada - in the eastern shields, plains
and east coast Atlantic maritime; the central Mixed wood
plains, Boreal forests, prairie and tundra plains; the
frozen Arctic; and the western mountains, glaciers and
western coast Pacific maritime.
